The abuse of prescription medication has serious risks for a person’s health and wellbeing. However, because of the misconception that prescription drugs are safer to use than illicit street drugs, many individuals abuse these medications without realizing the risks. In reality prescription drug abuse can wreak havoc in a person’s life.

At Starlite Recovery Center, we recognize how difficult it can be to break free from an addiction to prescription medication. Furthermore, we know the extensive damage that this type of addiction can cause in a person’s life. For these reasons, we offer a number of comprehensive, individualized treatment programs for men and women whose lives have been affected by the disease of addiction. At Starlite we view chemical dependency as a primary disease that is both progressive and potentially fatal. We also understand that the disease of addiction affects the entire person, mind, body, and spirit, which is why our treatment is holistic in nature. Our goal is to provide treatment that promotes a healthy and productive lifestyle, free from the chains of addiction.

Why Consider Treatment

Why Consider Treatment for Prescription Drug Abuse at Starlite Recovery Center in Texas

The disease of addiction is dangerous and can even be deadly. It affects every aspect of the addict’s life – personal and professional, as well as their emotional wellbeing and physical health. Each type of substance, including prescription medication, comes with its own risks, but the overall conclusion is, if left untreated, addiction kills.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), prolonged substance use, including the abuse of prescription drugs, can cause a significant amount of health problems, such as organ damage, hormonal imbalances, fertility issues, or prenatal concerns. In addition, some of the most common long-term effects of prolonged prescription drug abuse can include changes in mood, engagement in erratic behavior, mental cloudiness, and confusion. Those who abuse prescription drugs may also begin to struggle with sleep difficulties, anxiety, extreme hyperactivity, and possible suicidal ideation.

It should also be noted that those who abuse substances like prescription medication are at an increased risk for injuries, accidents, domestic violence, and death.

Starlite provides a variety of evidence-based treatment protocols that are proven to be effective. This includes individual and group therapy, facilitated by a staff of trained, caring professionals. And because addiction to prescription drugs is a disease that affects every member of a client’s family, we also provide family counseling to help in the recovery process.

Medically-supervised detox: Upon admission, clients enter Starlite’s detox program, which is both safe and effective in removing the harmful substances which have contributed to addiction. Under our highly trained medical staff’s supervision, clients complete the process of withdrawal from prescription medication with minimal discomfort and risk. Our program uses only the most effective detox protocols while providing 24/7 nursing staff, daily physician visits, and on-call physician coverage in order to preserve our clients’ safety. Clients are welcome to attend programming during the day so as to jumpstart the healing and recovery process.

Residential program: After successfully completing detox, clients are able to move to the residential treatment program to continue their treatment for prescription drug addiction. Situated on 55 peaceful acres in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, clients work closely with counselors and technicians and receive ongoing support as they work towards achieving life-long recovery from an addiction to prescription medication.

Types of Treatment

Types of Prescription Drug Abuse Treatment Offered at Starlite Recovery Center

For more than 65 years, Starlite’s dedicated professionals, who possess a wealth of knowledge and expertise, have provided substance abuse treatment in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. Although our treatment programs typically run between 30 and 45 days, clients can extend their stays, when necessary.

The five main residential treatment programs offered at Starlite Recovery Center include:

The Adult Program is for men and women over 18 years of age. This 30-day rehab program has been specifically designed to help those struggling to overcome issues with alcohol and other drugs, including codeine.

The Journey Christian Program is offered for clients who desire a faith-based approach to the recovery process as they overcome their addiction to alcohol. This non-denominational track provides addiction treatment services from a Christian point-of-view.

The Freedom LBGTQ+ Program offers specialized treatment for clients identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender-queer, intersex, or asexual (LGBTQ+).

The Operation Liberty Program addresses the complex, specific needs of active-duty military and veterans struggling with addiction and co-occurring mental health concerns.

The Cover 6 Program serves the first responder community for those who have a primary diagnosis of a substance use disorder. We also provide services for those who have co-occurring mental health concerns.

Upon admission, all clients at Starlite Recovery Center are assigned a primary case manager and a small group for participation in the group process. Additionally, clients meet with an interdisciplinary treatment team of physicians, counselors, and nurses who will effectively manage their individualized care. The focus on individualized, compassionate care is the core of everything we do at Starlite. Treatment at Starlite Recovery Center provides each client with education on the disease of addiction, including addiction to prescription drugs, helps identify barriers to success, and establishes a foundation for lifelong recovery.

At Starlite, treatment for substance abuse may include many of the following components:

Detoxification: All clients who are admitted to Starlite Recovery Center for prescription drug addiction are placed in our detoxification unit for an observation period of at least 24 hours to ensure that they are physically safe and stable before engaging in the therapeutic process. Clients in detox are under constant supervision and are seen by our medical director on a daily basis.

Medication management: Once the detox process is complete, clients may meet with our medical director on an as-needed basis for any medication needs. While there is no FDA-approved medication to treat substance abuse, medication may be used to treat the symptoms of a co-occurring mental health disorder. All medication needs are determined on a case-by-case basis.

Individual therapy: All Starlite clients meet with their primary counselor at least once a week for individual counseling and personalized treatment planning. Individual sessions offer a number of benefits, including helping an individual better understand their addiction to prescription medication.

Group therapy: All clients engage in a number of group sessions each week with their assigned process group. Group sessions are held for at least an hour and a half each day and focus on issues that have been identified by either the clients themselves or by their counselor. Life skills groups consist of lecture or discussion sessions that focus on topics such as identifying personal triggers, developing coping skills, using sober support systems, and preventing relapse. Educational groups are designed to provide understanding in areas that affect clients’ daily lives.

Family therapy: Starlite understands the importance of family participation in the process of recovery from an addiction to prescription drugs. Family sessions are held every week on Friday and Saturday. In addition to these weekly family therapy sessions, Starlite also provides a two-day intensive family program, which includes a combination of education, family process groups, and skill building.

Experiential therapy: Experiential therapy, such as recreational groups and activities, is provided on a daily basis in order to enhance the emotional, physical, and cognitive wellbeing of our clients. Experiential therapy helps to ensure that the whole person is being treated. Some of the specific activities our clients may participate in include:

  • Life skills groups
  • Specific theme groups
  • Participation in a Twelve Step group
  • Twelve Step, or “Big Book” Study
  • Onsite certified personal trainer
  • Fully equipped workout facility, outdoor pool (open seasonally), miniature golf, wilderness outings, and nature trails

Continuing Care and Levels of Treatment for Prescription Drug Abuse

Throughout their time at Starlite, all clients work closely with their case managers and alumni coordinator to create a continuing care plan and identify needed support services.

From the day clients enter treatment until long after they have competed our residential program, they remain valued members of the Starlite family. We are committed to providing the highest quality of care to those who choose to heal with us.

Creating cocktails of prescription drugs used to be a big part of my free time. The staff at Starlite Recovery Center helped me get the appropriate rehab and detox. I am celebrating my first year of sobriety and am confident that I will have many more to come with the supportive staff at Starlite to support and help me on this journey.
